Imperfection as a Function of Cultural Authenticity
Features or qualities that may appear as imperfections to less familiar
observers are often the things that rug collectors search for. The average
rug buyer may be perturbed by irregularities in the shape of the rug or the
drawing in the design, or they may be put off by sudden changes in color
within the design. Borders or field patterns that change shape or pattern
abruptly are similarly disconcerting to many observers. But they are all
features that spring from the cultural creativity of tribal or village
weavers, and consequently they are the very things that many collectors
actively seek out when looking for a rug. |
